About HitraKrabbe

Parmesan comes from Italy. Champagne comes from France. Crab comes from Hitra.

Ansnes on Hitra has been a place of trade in fish and seafood ever since the 18th century.

In the 1930s, the merchant Sivert Anton Fjeldvær saw the potential of crab as a delicacy from the sea. In time he discovered that crab from Hitra held a competitive advantage in quality.

A crab receiving station was established at Ansnes, and from here the crab was sold on to people along the coast — and not least to Trondheim.

Ever since 1930, the company HitraMat has harvested brown crab from the sea with a focus on quality, innovation and pride in the craft.

Crab fishing is sustainable, and the crab is still caught in traditional pots from small coastal fishing boats.

Why HitraKrabbe?

The brown crab is found from Troms in the north to the Aegean Sea and the coast of Morocco in the south. But off Hitra, on the coast of Trøndelag, the Gulf Stream from the south meets the cold water coming down from the Barents Sea in the north. This creates distinctive ocean currents that give optimal temperatures and perfect living conditions for the Hitra crab. A crab that lives well tastes good.

The quality of HitraKrabbe has carried it not only across Norway, but well beyond the country's borders. France is among the largest export markets, and the French speak of the Hitra crab as «crème de la crème».
